On last night's LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER , nobody likes the IRS, but recent budget and staff cuts have made it increasingly difficult for the department to do its very important job.

Today in 2011, Godspell opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where it ran for 264 performances. Godspell is a musical by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak. It opened off Broadway on May 17, 1971, and has played in various touring companies and revivals many times since.The structure of the musical is that of a series of parables, based on the Gospel of Matthew (though three of the parables featured are recorded only in the Gospel of Luke). These are then interspersed with a variety of modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns, with the passion of Christ treated briefly near the end of the performance.

The Marriott Theatre presents the Chicagoland premiere of the Broadway Revival of GODSPELL, opening tonight, June 11 and running through August 10 at 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire, IL. GODSPELL was originally conceived and directed by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, composer of Wickedand Pippin. Director and Choreographer Matt Raftery delivers a fresh, organic, intimate production, literally 'illustrating' the parables of the New Testament and bringing its lessons to life on the Marriott stage. Featured over the weekend was revered composer, lyricist, and librettist Michael John LaChiusa- returning to American Songbook after his triumphant debut a decade ago. Known for his acclaimed Tony-nominated musicals Marie Christine and The Wild Party, his recent epic musical adaptation of Giant flourished at the Public Theater. Theatre at the Center, 1040 Ridge Road, continues their 2013-2014 season with a revival of one of Broadway's most popular rock musicals, GODSPELL. The groundbreaking production based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew runs Thursday, September 12 through October 20. Featuring a sparkling score by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), and an energetic book by original director John-Michael Tebelak, GODSPELL is the upbeat retelling of a series of biblical parables. John Michael Coppola, from Chicago's long running production of JERSEY BOYS, will bring his solo concert, A JERSEY VOICE: Sinatra to Springsteen...And Everyone In Between to three states. Featuring song selections from the 1940s through present day, the set list includes songs made popular by such artists as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and of course, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Coppola understudied and performed the role of Frankie Valli in the Chicago production of the Broadway hit.
