Review - Flamingo Court: Love, Boca Raton Style

Playgoers with fond memories of wholesomely sexy television comedies like Love, American Style and The Love Boat may get a kick out of Flamingo Court, Luigi Creatore's trio of one-acts about romance among elderly Florida retirees. The octogenarian playwright most known to Broadway audiences for having co-written the book, music and lyrics for Maggie Flynn (ya gotta love a guy who can get a musical about the New York Draft Riots to Broadway) Creatore may not have written the laff-riot of 2008, but the evening is often very sweet and amusing, especially when he's not making fart jokes.

Oh sure, it's still the most breathtaking, emotionally packed evening of damn near perfect musical theatre in town (No, make that of theatre in town.) and Ms. LuPone's Rose is now an even more complex and finely detailed portrayal, but while she hasn't exactly turned demure on us for Gypsy's transfer to Broadway, she has seriously toned it down.

Savvy BroadwayWorld.com visitors noticed a message up on Telecharge.com for those purchasings tickets to Gypsy's final performances back when they were to be in March. The good news for fans of the show, who were worried that the show's early closing might have derailed those plans is that the message is back up for the shows between January 2 and January 4, 2009.
